How to Measure for Sills — Standard Sills

Standard Sills are made in various lengths and depths to be cut to fit your opening. Here is how to measure your openings and select the best size sill.

LENGTH

Measuring Window Width

Measure the width of the inside jamb to jamb of the window opening.

Sill‑Rite Standard Sills are available in lengths of 3', 4', 5', 6' and 8'. Choose the sill length that is closest to, but not smaller than, your measurement.

EXAMPLE:
Sill Lengths
Feet Inches
3' 36"
4' 48"
5' 60"
6' 72"
8' 96"

If the window opening measures 39-1/2", the smallest sill length you can use is 4' (48"). If you have two window openings of this size, you can either use two 4' sills or cut both sills out of one 8' length.

DEPTH

Measure Opening Depth

Sill‑Rite Standard Sills are available in depths from 2 to 8 inches—in one-inch increments—to accommodate various wall thicknesses and window depths.

Measure the depth of the opening from the front of the window to the wall surface. Select a sill depth that is closest to that size but not smaller.

The Sill‑Rite sill will actually protude an inch beyond the stated sill depth. So, even though a 4-inch deep sill fits an existing depth of 4-inches or less, but is actually 5-inches deep.

Notes for Replacing Marble Sills

In most cases, Sill‑Rite sills can be installed directly on top of existing marble sills. If the thickness of the existing sill is 5/8" or less, the finished edge of the Sill‑Rite sill will completely cover the marble.
